Free to start, skills that pay

AI Tools That Pay

You don’t need twenty subscriptions — you need one or two tools you know inside out. Every tool below has a free tier, so you can start earning before you spend a penny.

How to pick your first tool

Don’t start with the tool — start with the service you could sell. If you can write, an AI writing assistant multiplies you. If you’ve got an eye for layout, design tools do. Pick the one closest to a skill you already have, spend a week learning it properly, then list one narrow service on a freelance platform.

Depth beats breadth: one tool you’re genuinely quick with earns more than five you’ve only dabbled in.

The tools worth learning

Four categories, one solid free option in each.

AI writing assistants — Claude & ChatGPT

The workhorses. Draft copy, product descriptions, CVs, emails and social posts in minutes, then polish in your own voice. The most in-demand AI skill on freelance platforms.

Earn with it: copywriting gigs, CV writing, blog drafting, social media captions.

Design — Canva

Canva’s AI features (Magic Design, background removal, text-to-image) let non-designers produce sellable graphics. Templates do the heavy lifting; you supply the taste.

Earn with it: social media graphics, CV templates, printables on Etsy, small business branding packs.

Video — CapCut & Descript

Auto-captions, silence removal and text-based editing have collapsed the time video editing takes. Short-form editing is one of the busiest gig categories right now.

Earn with it: editing shorts and reels for creators, podcast clipping, faceless video channels.

Organisation — Notion AI

Less obvious, quietly lucrative: businesses pay for organisation. Build content calendars, client dashboards and process documents faster with AI summaries and drafting built in.

Earn with it: virtual assistant services, Notion template shops, content planning for small businesses.

Turning a tool into income

The pattern is the same whichever tool you choose. Learn it for a week using its free tier — make real things, not tutorials. Then list one specific service on Fiverr, Upwork or PeoplePerHour: “I’ll edit your podcast into five short clips” beats “video editing services” every time. Price low for your first three jobs to collect reviews, then raise your rates.

Once you’re earning, the paid tier of your chosen tool usually pays for itself within a job or two — that’s the point to upgrade, not before.

Tools to be wary of

Steer clear of anything sold as a push-button money machine: “AI apps” that promise to build and run a business for you, article spinners that churn out unedited content, and lifetime deals for tools you’ve never heard of. If the tool’s marketing spends more time on income claims than on what it actually does, that tells you everything.

A simple rule: the big-name tools above are free to try and sell themselves on capability. Anything hiding behind a countdown timer and a testimonial wall isn’t a tool — it’s a pitch.
